Dr Jo Allen has a long history of working as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Systemic Psychotherapist in the NHS and privately. She has worked in mental health services in the NHS for 20 years supporting families and people with severe mental health difficulties. She has extensive experience of working with people with neurodiversity, behavioural difficulties, psychosis, bipolar, depression and anxiety. She has a history of supporting families at times of change and processing difficult life events and family dynamics. This includes supporting couples in times of change and challenge through couples therapy including supporting couples to separate and navigate divorce, parents in supporting children with challenges and families where the children are now adults and the family want to support a change in their relationship. She also supports individuals working through moving on from trauma in relationships and managing anxiety and depression.
She developed and edited national guidance for working with families affected by psychosis and complex mental health. She is the co-chair of the complex mental health faculty within the British Psychological Society and has a role in training clinical psychology trainees and systemic psychotherapy trainees at Royal Holloway, Kings College and Salomons Universities. She also supervises and consults with qualified practitioners. She is passionate about supporting thinking in systems and understanding mental distress in context of life events and the challenge of working in a family system.
