Pregnancy and Birth

The Child and Family Practice has a number of specialists who work with women, their partners and families when they are planning a pregnancy, pregnant, postnatal and in the early years of family life (the perinatal period).

What help is available?

The experience of pregnancy and birth can be mentally challenging for a number of reasons. About 1 in 5 women experience mental health difficulties during pregnancy and in the first year of their child’s life – this includes the exacerbation of pre-existing mental health problems as well as issues that were previously non-existent. Alongside all of the physical and mental challenges involved with pregnancy and birth, it can be a difficult time for relationships, and partners’ mental health can also be affected.

Pregnancy planning, assessment and treatment for women with pre-existing mental health problems, assessment and treatment for new mental health problems, advice about medication, help with parenting, and consultations and interventions regarding your baby’s health are just some of the options available. Psychological support is available to all new and expecting parents, no matter what they feel they may be struggling with.
